Surprise! Seattle's Newly Cleaned Gum Wall Already Tacky

Pike Place Market might have sent out a news release Monday morning announcing that Seattle's famous gum wall was clean, but by the time it went out, it was already wrong.

By Monday morning, the gum wall - cleaned last week for the first time in 20 years - was already sticky and smelling of every flavor under the sun, with a wide swath of the wall loaded with fresh gum.

The Seattle Times reported Sunday that a flash mob had met Saturday to re-gum the brick wall just south of Pike Place Market in Post Alley. As part of their work, they made a peace sign with the Eiffel Tower in the middle to honor Paris after the horrific terrorist attacks Friday, the Times reported.

But only faint traces of the design remained Monday morning, while a significant portion of the east wall was covered in gum.

Danica Legaspi and Erwin Dizon were in Seattle visiting from Las Vegas and trekked down to the wall Monday morning with gum bought just for sticking on the wall.

The two arrived in Seattle last week, just as the wall was being cleaned.

"We're so sad because took it down right when we were coming here," Dizon said.

They chewed up large pieces of gum and took a series of photos of each other before pressing their gum into the wall and heading off.

According to the release about the cleaning, the work to get 20 years of gum off the wall took about 130 hours to complete, removing more than a ton of gum in the process.

Artists pasted up art pieces on Saturday as well.
