BREAKING: 4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Felt Across Kansas and Oklahoma

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake centered near Cherokee, Oklahoma has shaken most of the state of Kansas according to the U.S Geological Survey.  It was reported around 1:42 a.m. Thursday, November 19th. A more exact epicenter is 13 km SW of Cherokee, Oklahoma.

Many of you felt it in places like Wichita, Hutchinson, Kansas City, Newton, Oklahoma City and more. Leave us a comment with where you felt it. You can report it to the USGS by clicking here.
The furthest away that someone reported feeling the earthquake was in Tucson, Arizona which is 1,231 miles from the epicenter. The closest reported to USGS was in Carmen Oklahoma, only 9 miles away.

The earthquake shook in 8 states including Kansas, Arizona, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Arkansas and Illinois.

Emergency dispatchers in Sedgwick County says they have received well over 80 calls reporting the earthquake. That is not the purpose of the emergency dispatch center, and people are advised not to call to report earthquakes unless there is an emergency associated with the call.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, there were so many birds that took flight after the earthquake, it could be seen on radar.
KWCH has a special earthquake page on previous earthquake stories we've done here.
There you can see that even smaller earthquakes than the one we felt today in Oklahoma have had a lasting impact in Kansas.

The page also has helpful tips from  the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to help keep you safe.

Thousands of Kansans took to Eyewitness News’ social media channels to let us know they felt the quake.

Rick Nuckolls said, “I went through the LA earthquake many years ago and it lasted longer with more shaking but I knew this was fairly strong. This one seemed to last about 10 seconds and the house was shaking & creaking with the chimes on the grandfather clock ringing.”

Beth Andsager of Nickerson reported, “I live in Nickerson in a 2 story house. I was standing in my kitchen at 1:40 am this morning and noticed my tea glass on the counter was sloshing around and the next thing was me feeling the whole house tremble. Have not felt anything like that since I was in California in 1993 and Sun Valley had a massive earthquake.

This from Linda Pfau in North Newton, "Felt very strong quake at 1:45 this morning. Really shook us here on 3rd floor in North Newton.”

And a viewer in Hutchinson told us, "Felt the earthquake in Hutch about 1:42 am or so. Was watching TV when the bed literally lifted, rocked and rolled. At the same time there was a loud noise and the whole house shook and rattled the windows. Formerly of California, I knew right away what it was... but after a couple minutes I thought I'd better double check for a vehicle crashed on my porch or a hot water heater explosion or something"
