Passengers removed after 'suspicious activity' aboard plane at BWI

A BWI flight bound for Chicago Tuesday morning was delayed when four people were removed from the plane, according to Maryland Transportation Authority police.

Officers removed three men and one woman from Spirit Airlines flight 969 while it was held at gate, missing a 6 a.m. departure, according Sgt. Jonathan Green, a spokesman with the Maryland Transportation Authority, which patrols Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

"While the aircraft was taxiing to the runway, a passenger alerted a flight attendant of a passenger engaged in suspicious activity on board," according to a statement from Spirit. The airline said that "out of an abundance of caution, the plane returned to the gate."
Green said the flight crew made the decision to return to the gate, and the four passengers were removed from the plane.
Green said no arrests have been made, but that the individuals were being interviewed. Several federal agencies are investigating the incident, and "to make sure the aircraft is safe," Green said.

All passengers were deplaned for a brief time, a Spirit officials said. The aircraft and luggage was cleared by the Transportation Security Administration and the plane was expected to take off.
